How to Find Your Color Season

You've probably already taken an online quiz, read an article titled "6 signs you're a cool summer," or asked a friend whether you're more "warm" or "cool." And yet, you're still not sure. That's completely normal: most free tools rely on criteria that are too vague, or on a single photo taken in poor conditions. Here's what actually matters.

Undertone, not skin color

The first mistake is confusing skin tone (fair, medium, deep) with undertone (warm, cool, neutral). You can have very fair skin and a warm undertone, or deep skin and a cool undertone — these are two completely different pieces of information. Undertone shows in the nuances beneath the surface of the skin, not in its depth.

Why home tests aren't reliable

The gold/silver jewelry test, the wrist-vein test, the white/ivory fabric test: these are starting points, not answers. They offer a clue, but ambient lighting, a tired complexion that day, or even the screen you're reading them on easily skews the result. Many women test as "summer" one day and "autumn" the next, simply because of the lighting. (We break down why these tests — and even ChatGPT — get it wrong so often in our article on color analysis myths.)

The most common mistakes

Artificial or yellow-toned light completely changes how colors are perceived — a test done under a warm bulb will almost always point to "warm," incorrectly. Makeup also distorts the analysis: foundation, blush or concealer hide the real undertone. And a photo taken with even a subtle filter is enough to make the result unusable.

What a real analysis looks at beyond undertone

Beyond undertone, a serious analysis also considers the natural contrast between your skin, hair and eyes, along with the clarity and saturation that suit you best. It's the combination of these elements — not a single isolated criterion — that determines your true season. That's why at Nuance, every photo is reviewed individually by an expert, not just an algorithm: technology measures, the human eye validates.

In short

If after several tests you're still getting different answers, you're not the problem — the method is. A real color analysis needs an expert eye, a photo taken in good conditions, and a proven method rather than a generic quiz.
