Foundation Matched to Your Color Season

A foundation can be the right depth and still look visible, grey, or too pink. The issue is almost never the shade's depth — it's the undertone. Here's how to choose the right one based on your season.

Depth and undertone are two different things

Depth is how light or deep the shade is (fair, medium, deep). Undertone is its warmth (golden, pink, neutral). A foundation can have the right depth and the wrong undertone — that's the most common mistake, and the most visible once applied.

Undertone by season

If you're an autumn or spring, look for foundations with a golden, peachy or warm undertone — often labeled "warm" or "golden" on the packaging. If you're a winter or summer, favor pink, neutral or slightly cool undertones — often labeled "cool" or "neutral". A golden foundation on cool-undertone skin gives an orange-ish cast; the reverse gives a grey or ashy cast.

The mistake to avoid in-store

Testing on your wrist or hand doesn't help — that skin often has a different undertone from your face. The right test is along the jawline, in natural light, never under a store's artificial lighting — which almost always distorts the perception of warm and cool undertones.

What if you're neutral?

If your undertone is neutral, you actually have more flexibility than strongly warm or cool profiles — most "neutral" or slightly warm foundations work, as long as you check in natural light rather than guessing.

In short

The right foundation isn't the one with the right color on the packaging — it's the one that matches your real undertone. Our free pre-diagnosis determines your season in a few minutes, so you stop buying at random.
